When you go on the Everest Base Camp trek or any other teahouse trek, it is very important to take the right clothes and gears to avoid unnecessary complications.
Depending on the seasonal variations of the surrounding, it can get quite hot during the day at lower altitudes, and temperatures often fall below 0°C at night at higher altitudes.
So you are suggested to go up slowly, take it easy, and give your body time to get used to the altitude. It’ll be so worth it in the end.

a. Trekking trousers – You will normally need two of these. One convertible and one that you can turn into shorts.

Icebreakers is suggested because they don’t smell as nasty. You’ll have to wear the same shirts for a few days in a row because you won’t be able to do much washing during the trek.
c. Long-sleeve shirts
This is also suggested an Icebreaker one because they’re the most preferable. They are very comfortable, warm you when it is cold, cool you when it is warm. More importantly, you don’t smell like a beast after those long our treks.
d. Pairs of socks
You are required to buy two lining socks, two cool-max trekking socks and two padded trekking socks. You won’t have to wear lining socks under these.
e. Pairs of breathable underpants –
For these too Icebreaker is proved to be very good. Alternatively, you can use some sports pants you can buy in a sport shop which can be much cheaper.
f. Sport bras
During the day, there’s a high possibility of you sweating like an athlete. So for that you can put on sport bras which will be much more comfortable.
g. Long johns
This might not exactly be appealing to some but it is quite necessary for trekking above 5000m during night time.
h. Fleece lined tracksuit bottoms or down trousers
These are best worn when trekking at high altitudes when it gets cold during the day. And in the evenings and during the night, you can wear these on top of the long johns.
i. Hiking boots
This is the most important item you’ll need. They are responsible for either making or breaking your trek. You have to ensure that they are comfortable and big enough to be able to wear two pairs of socks perfectly.
j. Trekking sandals – Your feet might want to be out of those tight boots for a while. Sandals are perfect to let them breathe a little.
k. Down shoes
These can be bought during your trek at gear shops. They are very useful to keep your feet warm.
l. Lightweight windproof fleece
These are required especially for daytime trekking.
m. Warm fleece
These can be very useful for the nights. You can even sleep in them.
n. Waterproof rain trousers
These can be worn on top of your normal trousers to apply additional warmth and prevent yourself from getting your clothes wet.
o. Lining gloves and windproof gloves
These are very much useful to prevent your hands from getting cold. Normal fleece gloves aren’t suggested as they let the wind through.
Neckbands can be worn as a scarf, facemask and headband to keep your hair out of your face.
a. Diamox tablets
These tablets can help you prevent symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS), such as headaches or dizziness.
There can be quite a possibility of you getting AMS despite taking these but they will certainly help you at the lower altitudes.
A basic side effect is that they can make you pee a lot which can be frustrating especially at night when you have to leave your warm sleeping bag to get that done.
b. Blister plasters
Sometimes when trekkers’ boots and socks don’t fit them quite well, they might develop blisters on parts of their feet.
This is the reason why you should always carry blister plasters with you.
c. Diarrhea tablets
You do not want to be suffering from this especially when you’re away from home. You are suggested to buy diarrhea tablets and carry them with you.
a. Trekking poles
These can be of so much use especially when you’re suffering from AMS and need a support.
Moreover, they can also be invaluable for steep ascents as you can lean your whole bodyweight on them. They help your knees prevent from pain during descents as well.
b. Head torch and spare batteries
It is possible that some mountain huts might not have electricity at night. You will certainly have to go to the toilet at night. So head torches can come off very helpful.
c. Sleeping bags
Sleep is essential to regain your energy for the day. You really need to get a warm sleeping bag. It really gets intensely cold at night.
However, sleeping bags are quite bulky and expensive, so you can always hire and have your porter carry them for you.
d. Sleeping bag liner

e. Water sterilizing and neutralizing tablets
During the trek, it is equally expensive if you buy water on local shops. And if you are someone who drinks 2 liter plus each day it soon increases up.
Tap water in the mountain huts is fine as long as you sterilized the water with chlorine tablets. And you have to add a neutralizing tablet which takes away the chlorine taste.
It is really important to have a comfortable rucksack, if you want to carry your own stuffs. And make sure it is adjustable according to your height.
The porters can carry them for you, but it is nice to make it as comfortable as possible for your porters too. Their hard work is appreciable.
I don’t have to remind you that comfort is everything. It is also recommended that a daypack with airflow on the back will make your back less sweaty.
h. DSLR camera
Most of the trekkers are actually photographers and like to capture the moment they experience.
This trip is once in a life time opportunity and can be very photogenic. You got to make sure that you take a decent camera with you.
i. Polarized sunglasses with UV protection
These can be worn at 5500m altitude to prevent your eyes from UV rays.
j. Hydration sack
Water is really important because you need to keep yourself hydrated.
It can be too difficult to reach to the side of your backpack to get the water bottle out all the time, especially when carrying trekking poles.
A hydration pack is made up of a hose which can be placed through the top of your backpack and you can then put it through your shoulder strap making it easier to drink the water, as it is always accessible.
k. Drinking bottle
You can carry any liters of water according to your preference. It is useful when the hydration pack is empty.
Gaiters are really important to protect your boots and trousers from mud or rain.
m. Waterproof sack
A must for every trekker especially if you want your electronics to be away from water.
a. Baby wipes
These can be the most invaluable thing you can have with you on your trek.
If you don’t like cold and cleaning your hands with cold water, baby wipes can be a great alternative to clean your hand.
You will smell like a baby which can be very appealing to some.
b. Foot wipes
Baby wipes can also be used for feet. However, you can buy yourself foot wipes which were great as foot hygiene is really important when it comes to trekking.
c. Talcum powder
There can be swelling in your feet due to the sweat that builds up during the trek. It looks really bad so talcum powder will take the moisture out of your feet making them soft and smooth.
d. Travel sized shampoo
Often people don’t like to take baths but if you want a quick shower this can be very helpful.
e. Hand sanitizer
These can be very useful especially when there’s lack of soaps and when you don’t want to get your hands wet with cold water.
It can get sunny sometimes so you have to be prepared for everything.
The cold temperature tends to dry out your lips and cheeks. Lip balms can be applied in such cases.
h. Face masks
The trek can get very dusty at times. This is not nice when you are breathing because it can cause you getting coughs and nose problems.
i. Travel wash
You can use this whenever you want to wash underwear and socks.
If you’re travelling during the time of the month, you are suggested to carry some tampons or any sanitary pads with you.
